The project aimed to optimize traffic management and improve the coordination of the traffic light network within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. Its objective was to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, shorten travel times, and enhance road safety across the municipality’s urban road network.
Role LuxMobility
LuxMobility was responsible for the delivery of specialized traffic control engineers (from the Netherlands) for the local consulting firm ITS Engineers. The first step was to visualize and archive the existing traffic control situation (signalgroups, greentimes, cycle times, offsets). In as second step an optimization too place of it functioning (co-ordination, offset, cycletime, split), by using specialized software as TruTraffic. Signalplans for different clock periods (morning peak, peak-off hours, and son on) were included.
The project also supported broader mobility goals such as reducing vehicle emissions, improving the reliability of public transport movements, and strengthening the municipality’s capacity to manage increasing urban traffic demand in a rapidly growing metropolitan area.
